Katlego Mphela once had hopes of playing overseas

Katlego Mphela once had hopes of playing overseas in the best league possible, perhaps even with hopes of playing the UEFA Champions League like former FC Porto and Orlando Pirates star Benni McCarthy.

Benni McCarthy is no small figure in world football, as a player he represented Ajax Amsterdam (Netherlands) – winning the Eredivisie once and the KNVB Cup twice, Celta Vigo (Spain) prior to their relegation – winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup as well as FC Porto (Portugal) – winning the Portuguese League twice, Portuguese Cup once, Portuguese Supercup once, the UEFA Champions League once and the final edition of the Intercontinental Cup before it was abolished.

Benni McCarthy also played for English Premier League sides Blackburn Rovers before they were relegated and West Ham United before returning home to South Africa where he spent two seasons in the Premier Soccer League with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and went on to win the League, the Top 8 and the League Cup.

Katlego Mphela first surfaced playing Jomo Cosmos, a South African football club besieged with inconsistencies, he the went to the French side Strasbourg but spent most his time there on loan at Stade Reims, he then spent two seasons at SuperSport United before joining Mamelodi Sundowns he glimpsed excellence during a spell spanning six years.

In 2014 Katlego Mphela joined the Soweto high flyers, Kaizer Chiefs, but had a dismal time there besieged with injuries and limited game time.

At the conclusion of the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League Season he was released from his contract at Kaizer Chiefs, this is according to Soccer Laduma who quoted Bobby Motaung saying, “We have come to terms with Killer Mphela to release him. We’ve given him his clearance and settled his contract so he can look to his career elsewhere.”

Katlego Mphela himself was later quoted by the Times Live saying “I actually wanted to leave Chiefs – my mind was made up a long time ago, I was not going to be anyone’s punching bag or second choice . . . I just wasn’t enjoying my football. I wanted to be No 1 and for that I needed to play.”

As of July 2, 2015 Katlego Mphela’s services were rejected by the inconsistent Phokeng side, Platinum Stars who in recent years have welcomed a number of high profile rejects including Benson Mhlongo and Tlou Segolela.

Short of returning to Sundowns or SuperSport United, Katlego Mphela might struggle to find a championship club as Orlando Pirates is having problems with too many strikers.

The other other potential championship sides include BidVest Wits, Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic; however, this will be an all time low for Katlego Mphela who once dreamed of playing overseas
