Power King won the 2015 Durban July

Power King ridden by Jockey Stuart Randolph won the 2015 Durban July on Saturday afternoon of July 04 in the city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

2015 Durban JulyThe 2015 Durban July was the 119th edition of the race and it took place in front of the 60 000 strong crowd and the prize money for the winner was R3.5 million.

Shortly after Power King’s victory a tense atmosphere gripped the Greyville Racecourse as the race was being reviewed after it was alleged that the winning horse [Power King] brushed against Punta Arenas as the horses came through the winning post.

After over thirty minutes Power King was declared a winner much to the relief of punters and the team behind the winning horse.

Power King was showered with praises after winning the main race at this year’s Durban July, “I didn’t want to hit the front too early and everything worked out beautifully.

“The horse on the outside [Punta Arenas] ran onto him and the first bump was marginal and then I had a bit of a nudge and the horse was unbalanced but he was so courageous and fought all the way through to the line,” Jockey Stuart Randolph told News24.

Parts of the 2015 Durban July were broadcast on SABC 3 with Vaylen Kirtley focusing of the racing part of the show while Bonang Matheba and Mika Stefano interviewed celebrities and scrutinized fashion.

It has been reported that the event will contribute over R220 million into the Durban economy.
